Prof. Chris Parsons was re-elected as the President of the Marine Section for the Society for Conservation Biology for a second consecutive term, the first time a section president has been elected twice. Prof. Parsons was also appointed to the Board of Governors for the Society for Conservation Biology for a second term.

Prof. Judith Skog assumed the duties of president of the Botanical Society of America at the society annual meetings July 30-August 4, 2010 in Providence, Rhode Island, where she gave her president's address. The mission of the Botanical Society of America is to promote botany, the field of basic science dealing with the study and inquiry into the form, function, development, diversity, reproduction, evolution, and uses of plants and their interactions within the biosphere. There are approximately 3,200 professional members of the society representing countries worldwide. The society publishes The American Journal of Botany which has been named one of the top 10 journals of science in the past 100 years by the Society of Scientific Librarians. In addition, the society offers Planting Science, a learning and research resource, bringing together students, plant scientists, and teachers from across the nation to engage in hands-on plant investigations.
Prof. Chris Parsons was appointed an Associate Editor of the new Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences.
Prof. Dann Sklarew has been appointed Mason's Fellow of Sustainability Studies for 2010-2012.
July 2010
Profs. Esther Peters and Robert Jonas taught "Diseases of Corals and Other Reef Organisms" at Mote Marine Laboratory's Tropical Research Laboratory on Summerland Key, FL, July 31-August 8, 2010. Dr. Peters also presented the "Coral Tissue Slide Reading Workshop" at the lab July 25-30. Both courses provide introductions to the field of pathobiology of marine organisms and can be taken for credit through GMU.

for both the Scientific Committee and the Conservation Committee of the
International Whaling Commission (which was held in Agadir, Morocco).
Prof. Nicole Darnall, has been named 2010 Associate Editor, Academy of Management, Organizations and the Natural Environment.
Prof. Nicole Darnall will continue to serve as Economic and Social Research Council/Social Science Research Council Collaborative Visiting Fellow in summer 2010. She will present her research at the Group of Organizations & the Natural Environment Conference in Milan, Italy.

Prof. Nicole Darnall was appointed Associate Faculty Member of the Center for Global Studies at George Mason University.
Prof. Nicole Darnall has been named 2010 Erasmus Mundus International Scholar by the European Commission’s Erasmus Mundus Programme in Environmental Sciences, Policy, and Management. The award will fund her research on the demand for corporate green strategy at the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics, Lund University (Lund, Sweden), and Central European University (Budapest, Hungary).

Prof. Lee Talbot was the subject of a two page profile in the September/October 2009 issue of AARP Magazine, “The World’s Largest Circulation Magazine.” The article prominently mentioned his professorship at George Mason University.

Prof. Esther Peters organized and served as Moderator of the special symposium, "Pathology and Medicine in Marine Ecosystem Conservation," presented during the May 2009 International Marine Conservation Congress held at George Mason University.
Prof. Chris Parsons was the director of the Local Organizing Secretariat of The First International Marine Conservation Congress, held at GMU. This event was attended by over 1,200 marine conservation scientists, policy makers and practitioners. The event featured up to 16 simultaneous conference sessions, symposia and workshops, with over twenty associated events, receptions and training activities, making it one of the largest marine conservation academic conferences ever held. He was assisted by a team of over twenty ESP graduate and undergraduate students including Katheryn Patterson (Assistant Director), Megan Draheim (Volunteer Coordinator), Ashley Sitar-Gonzales (Sustainability Officer), Jason O'Bryhim, Lorelei Crerar, Amy Bauer and Suzanne Hough.
