Dr. Cressey’s professional career began at the Smithsonian Institution where she worked for 20 years as a research assistant on the taxonomy and biogeography of parasitic copepods of marine fish. Along the way she discovered her love for undergraduate teaching and she began teaching full time at Mason in 1999. In 2001, she began to coordinate Introductory Biology. In 2002 she earned a D. A. in Community College Education from Mason, and in 2007 was asked to be the Director of Undergraduate Academic Programs for the College of Science.
In addition to Introductory Biology, Dr. Cressey also teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Ornithology and Animal Behavior. She assists with academic advising to Biology majors and is interested in helping biology students develop excellent writing skills. As COS Undergraduate Program Director and as a founding member of the George Mason COWS (Coalition Of Women Scientists), she and her colleagues are exploring, developing and implementing ways to improve the experience and quality of science education at Mason.
