Dozens of elementary teachers became students as they learned lessons from the bottom up from George Mason University professors during the Virginia Initiative for Science Teaching and Achievement (VISTA)’s Elementary Science Institute.
Dann Sklarew, associate professor in the Department of Environmental Science & Policy, has been discussing marine ecosystems with the teachers at Mason Pond on the Fairfax Campus. Dr. Sklarew turned a boat into a mobile classroom as he led hands-on experiments in marine ecosystems in what he called a “living laboratory” –Northern Virginia’s Occoquan River.
The teachers will take what they learned back to their own K-12 classes, turning ideas into action.
