Dr. Abbas was born and raised in the United Kingdom and grew up in Africa, Europe and the United States. Providing evidence-based criteria to help monitor, evaluate and design effective forestry supply and value chain programs is key to her background and experience. In her research, she seeks to investigate the linkages between sustainability and supply and value chains, forest operations and management, ecosystems, green economy, water resources management, resource extraction, supply and utilization strategies, waste reduction and development. As a result, she has built and maintained a nationally and internationally recognized program that addresses ecosystem services protection questions, operating in environmentally sensitive areas, cost and life cycle assessments, environmental risk assessment and management, the forest community and workforce education, and operator health, safety, monitoring and evaluation. She employs multiple quantitative and qualitative data collection and research methods to help design programs and objectives, characterize criteria and attributes and evaluate the human landscape impacts at different scales. Dr. Abbas has worked on international development projects in Africa, Europe and North America. In North America, she engaged with underrepresented and indigenous population groups, e.g. environmental problems linked with deforestation and the industrial effluents in water streams on First Nations lands in Canada as well as the potential for biomass supply and utilization on tribal lands in the United States. She also served as an NGO representative working with grassroots and in several United Nations fora, as a consultant for the Global Environment Facility’s Independent Evaluation Office to evaluate World Bank funding in deforestation removal, and is currently a national expert for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s panels. Dr. Abbas is also on the editorial board of several international environmental and ecological journals.
